NGO Sector and Frustration![]() By: Mansoor Hassan Updated on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 1:30:50 PM Printer this news | Email this news to a friend. NGO Sector and Frustration “Greetings to all, I read your email and I am agreed with you, there are same problem, which I am facing last four years, I worked with different so-called NGOs, which are only making money. We get funds for communities, but doing nothing for their communities. The upper and middle level management are interesting in drinks, sex and other pleasures. They are just thinking that how they get funds from donor agencies, they developed their personal relations with staff of donor agencies and give them commission (service Charges) for awarding projects. We, the people of NGO sector are going to hell. We are not sincere with us, our communities, our nation even our country” A- from Lahore “Dear Colleagues Greetings, I am writing these lines with heavy heart. Some two years ago, I came back to my homeland, known as "Pakistan". I was very excited to start my own organization, as my academic background comprised "Development Studies". I started working for my organization with the name of Rehabilitation of Old-age Sex Workers Association (ROSWA) but I am feeling ashamed of people behaviours. I could not find support for my projects because I do not consume alcohol and I cannot sleep with someone from donor agencies. So gradually, my organization turned bankrupt and I could not run it because of scarcity of funds. Therefore, I negotiated for my employment within NGO sector. I went to several renowned organizations and met with their executive but I came to know that no one could get job within Pakistani NGO circle without a solid reference. So one cannot find support for project if he/she don’t consume alcohol, and he/she cannot provide sex.one cannot get job in any NGO without any strong reference or relationship. Please tell me the truth as I am asking the question from the entire NGO community. What is going on? Do you deserve to be known? Another A from Pakistan These are two quotes from two genders, different exposure of people and having different knowledge and very much experiences people. When ever I said to my friends that NGOs are under clutches of “bagmats” of Generals and Colonels of Army. NGOs eat 70% for their “Management cost”. In 2000, I wrote a column in Urdu in Pakistan in which I mentioned that NGOs discussing about child poverty eat their lunch in Holiday Inn, eat Ice cream from yummy parlour and sleep in sheezan hotel to solve poverty of children. People who want to work really for children could not reach, in 2006 one female social worker sent me email that she wants to meet me ,I told her that I am in UK and asked the purpose, she told that she is running a free school, but her building is being evacuated by gang mafia, I could not do anything and she was forced to leave the building and end up hospital for many months as I told her that my dear lady I was forced to leave the country ,you just being sick on the fact that you were being forced to quit school These are the three practical example and many other experiences made me to write again on this issue, there is a lot of work to do in Pakistan and people like first statement and 2nd statement are now not happy with the system, I don’t want to comment on drinking or sleeping with someone but if it is price of providing a job or fund then it is very cruel and inhumane and barbaric fact. In addition, I am sure and I believe the statement, which is given in the start of this article. NGos should stop doing that but on the other hand can I give a message to these two people who give up their struggle that , NGOs doing this, those who forcing for forced sexual relation for rewarding job of fund, only happening because people like yourself gave up struggle, if you don’t I Assure you people will stop exploiting. I know it is not difficult and give suggestions to other is easy as why I did not resist when I was being forced for something, simple answer is I did not, can you do it for the welfare of those who are on same position as you are. If you will give up, who will save them?
